This is a three part pretest that I use at the begining of the school year for my 6/7 combined reading class. They learn about the different genres of literature for the first three weeks and then spend the rest of the year studying books of different genres in literature circles.

In my 6/7 reading class, we do a variety of literature circles studying various genres. For our realistic fiction literature circle they read books with the theme of animals (Because of Winn Dixie, Charlie's Raven, Rascal, Shiloh). A simple crossword puzzle for students to complete after reading Walt Whitman's biography on Biography.com. For struggling students, I read the biography aloud in a small group and ask them to underline key words on their own printed copies.

This assignment asks students to write a letter as one of the characters to another character. Students are asked to write five paragraphs. One that summarizes the events from their character's point of view, one that assigns blame for the suffering of the people in the play, one paragraph determining if Oedipus deserved his fate, one paragraph determining if Jocasta deserved her fate, and one paragraph asking what should happen next for the characters and the city.

This is the easier version of the examples of characterization graphic organizer. I teacher characterization in literature circles, so these are easily adaptable to any text and they seem to work pretty well.

The kids love this unit and the 100 points is their favorite part because I don't tell them what they have to do. They get really creative.
