I am currently in my fifth year of teaching. During my first two years, I taught Algebra I (9th grade math) and an Algebra remediation course for upperclassmen. In my third year (during COVID), I taught Geometry (10th grade math) and 7th grade math. I continue to teach 7th grade math with a special focus on social emotional learning. I also have over a decade of tutoring experience in various subjects and grade levels.
Very similar to the regular Among Us game! Crewmates have cards with equivalent expressions showing factoring and Distributive Property. Imposters have incorrect equations showing an error in the factoring or Distributive Property. A Game Moderator gets to choose the Imposters and manages Emergency Meetings. This game could take anywhere from 10 to 90 minutes depending on the class. The lesson length could be increased by having students explain or show why certain cards (equations) are Crewmate
As a middle school teacher, have you noticed an increase in classroom destruction, theft, out of control behaviors, disrespect, and lots of other negativity since returning to in-person school post-COVID?Due to a combination of ever-increasing rigorous standards, COVID restrictions, and technology, real social fun is limited for kids these days. As a result, they will take it however they can get it. This often looks like damage to the learning environment. Our kids haven't been taught the dynam
Are your students still struggling to understand negative numbers, set up number lines, and perform integer operations? This document contains every situation students need to remember when adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing positive and negative numbers. Students in my class use this graphic organizer combined with dry erase number lines to practice math facts and word problems involving integers. My 7th graders began the school year by answering 0/40 integer operation questions co
In this fun summative assessment, 9th grade math students will demonstrate what they know about linear and exponential functions and algebraic and geometric sequences. Students begin with their own fake YouTube channel and subscribers. Their goal is to increase the number of subscribers by a constant amount each week. They model the situation as a table, an equation, a function, and a graph. This document contains two different versions of the assessment along with an answer key for each. In the
Use this graphic organizer to remind students how to add and subtract positive and negative integers with a number line. Alternatively you can edit the Word document to create answer blanks for guided notes.
Allow students to take a break from their seats and gain understanding of positive and negative integers using this Would You Rather game. Display the PowerPoint on the board and have students read each situation. Then have students go to the side of the room or board corresponding to the best option. There are 20 Would You Rather prompts in this download.
This project was originally created for use with an Orion SkyQuest XT8 eight inch reflector telescope and project-based learning through a new tech program. However, the Word document is easily editable to remove the telescope experiment portion or to alter the rubrics. The original project in its entirety takes at least three 90-minute classes to complete.
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by Common Core and Ohio's Learning Standards? This condensed one-pager of the 7th grade Ohio math standards outlines the bare minimum topics, vocabulary, and procedures that you and your students need to know to be successful this year. A great tool for beginning teachers!
This is a great resource for project-based learning (PBL) and game-based classrooms. Students use the Mario Kart app on their phones to learn about a real world application of systems of equations. The instructor could easily adapt this activity from a printable Microsoft Word worksheet into a PDF, Google Doc, PearDeck, and more. It is also possible to edit this activity for more in-depth instruction on systems of equations. The additional materials recommended for this project are poster boar

Teaching style
Project-based learning (PBL) and gamification allow my students to engage deeply with math standards that they wouldn't normally feel apply to their daily lives. I strive to create a safe learning environment so that all students feel empowered by knowledge and are comfortable taking cognitive risks. I am currently researching the effects of play-based learning in the upper grades.
