I have been teaching for 12+ years and have taught all middle school math, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Calculus, AP Calculus AB, College Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, and Geophysical Science.
When to Use Use this activity as an introduction to the unit on curve sketching before doing any of the algebra to determine intervals of increasing, decreasing, and so on. How to Use Put students in pairs so they have one another to discuss the questions with. This is an excellent resource to use as a point of discussion and for students to notice patterns.
Students are to use their knowledge of curve sketching, first derivatives, and second derivatives to determine various characteristics of a graph. Students must use both equations and graphs to glean information. This can be used as a review towards the end of the unit or as an assessment.
Use this activity as an introduction to continuity and discontinuity. Have students cut out all of the graphs and then put them in to groups based on what they notice. Have them come up with a label for each group. Share out their findings. Then give them labels “Continuous”, “Point Discontinuity”, “Jump Discontinuity”, and “Infinite Discontinuity”. Have them rearrange their graphs and share out. This works great as a partner activity. It can also be used to discuss limits in Calculus.
When to Use I’ve used this as a way to put together critical numbers, critical points, intervals of increasing and decreasing, points of inflection, and concavity as part of the same problem, resulting in sketching the curve. When I use this resource, I usually do the first curve with the students and have them do the second one on their own. Students are to sketch the equation(s) and use the graphic organizer to set up the appropriate integral(s) to find the volume of the solid created when rotating the curve around an axis. Students have trouble when they have to set up two integrals. They also have trouble recognizing when to put the equation in terms of y.

Experience
I have been teaching for 12+ years and have taught all middle school math, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Calculus, AP Calculus AB, College Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, and Geophysical Science.
Teaching style
I love engaging students in discussion through discovery tasks and providing opportunities for collaboration. I consider myself to be a facilitator and scaffold their learning to help them be successful. I create an environment of respect and support students through their frustrations to teach them perseverance, giving all students chances to grow as mathematicians.
My own education history
I earned my BA in Mathematics and Chemistry with Secondary Teaching Certification in 2009 and my Master's in Education for Curriculum and Instruction in 2013.
Additional biographical information
I teach at a high school in the Metro Detroit area in Michigan and am the advisor for the National Honor Society chapter at my school. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions that you may have!
