After passing out a chocolate chip cookie (the cookie is the ground and the chocolate chips are the artifacts) and a toothpick (the pick/shovel) have the students go on an archeological dig. Time each session and have the students stop as you wish and complete the "Fossil Dig Observation Sheet" along the way.

This worksheet could be used as an introduction, a review or an assessment. Clues are given for nine different animals. The students have to choose which need the animal is meeting based on the clues.

It's a simple activity to use as an introduction, review or quiz around Presidents' Day and during African American History Month.
