Bottomless Math

Included are four word problems that require students to write and solve a related inequality. These pages are meant to be printed back to back and cut as half-sheets.

This notes sheet uses simple examples to introduce the distributive property. I use this as an introduction before we use the distributive property with fractions, mixed numbers, and variables.

I use this packet as an introduction to measurement. It covers non-standard units using length. Students measure length using their hands, paper clips, erasers, and 'measuring tools' of their choosing. This packet also guides discussion and reflection of 'why non-standard units are not the best choice for measuring'. Topics and vocabulary included: measuring, length, units, non-standard units, standard units, fractions (one-half), oval, how many?.

This Bottomless Math worksheet uses shapes and their vertices instead of numbers to practice addition and subtraction. Students count the vertices of two shapes and add them together or subtract them to find the sum or difference.

This unit plan has students planting and observing flowers, keeping a science observations journal, and using many materials and strategies to further their learning. This unit integrates language arts and math with the science content. CCSS friendly.

Once a week I give a lesson about how math is related to the world in which we watch a video or read an article, and I have my students completion a written reflection. I use this sheet at the beginning of the year to help guide them in their thinking and get used to my expectations. This reflection could be edited to be used in any subject area. I always require students to include a visual in their reflection to help show what they know, for which there is space at the bottom of the page.
