Bottomless Math

I use this packet as an introduction to measurement. It covers non-standard units using length. Students measure length using their hands, paper clips, erasers, and 'measuring tools' of their choosing. This packet also guides discussion and reflection of 'why non-standard units are not the best choice for measuring'. Topics and vocabulary included: measuring, length, units, non-standard units, standard units, fractions (one-half), oval, how many?.

This unit plan has students planting and observing flowers, keeping a science observations journal, and using many materials and strategies to further their learning. This unit integrates language arts and math with the science content. CCSS friendly.

Once a week I give a lesson about how math is related to the world in which we watch a video or read an article, and I have my students completion a written reflection. I use this sheet at the beginning of the year to help guide them in their thinking and get used to my expectations. This reflection could be edited to be used in any subject area. I always require students to include a visual in their reflection to help show what they know, for which there is space at the bottom of the page.
