A Play, The Coercive Acts and the First Continental Congress

Created by

I love using this when we are in our Road to Revolution unit. It is a fun way to learn about the punishments of the Coercive Acts and the emergency meeting of the Continental Congress. I organize a table in the middle of the room with a Union Jack flag sitting somewhere on it. I make the table look official with some other props, too. Off to the side I put a chair for my "throne". The King and Baines stay in that area. The Members of Parliament sit around the table first. They change places wi

As a classroom teacher I love to get my students up and active in class. Here is another chance to do just that. This time it is about the hated Stamp Act. I've also included some follow up questions that I discuss with my students or have them journal once we finish the play. Here is what's covered in this play: British viewpoint on taxing their colonies in North America. A description of the stamp tax and why it was enacted. The Virginia Resolves. The Stamp Act Congress and the writing of the

If you teach about the Road to Revolution in your class, this is a great way to get your students involved and engaged when you reach the Tea Act of 1773 and the Boston Tea Party 1773. Having students reenact history is an excellent way for them to "experience" what events were like. This is a great example. This play was written using eyewitness accounts and other excellent sources including information from the Boston Tea Party museum. If ever in Boston it is a must do! You even get to throw

The First Americans, A Play About The Bering Land Bridge (Native Americans)

This is a short play about the most well-known migration theory concerning Native Americans. If you are teaching about the origin of Native peoples in America, this is great way to help introduce the topic of the Bering Land Bridge theory. The play will take about 5-10 minutes. It is meant as an enhancement to a lesson. It's great to get students involved and engaged in class. This offers that opportunity. Enjoy and please let me know what you think! Presented at NCSS Boston 2014. I have been doing the Toy Entrepreneur project for years now. It is a true highlight of the year in our economics class. This simulation is my ENTREPRENEURSHIP unit in my economics course. The great thing about this simulation is that it can be completely tailored to your needs. You can do the whole thing as a unit or just some of the lessons. It's up to you. This is what Toy Entrepreneur is all about: *There is a step by step lesson plan for each day of the

Life in the Middle Colonies, A Play

Here is a skit I use when we are learning about the Middle Colonies in my classroom. It is a great way to enhance any lesson about the Middle Colonies either to introduce some of the characteristics of this region or reinforce what has been taught. All of my skits are written to engage students and get them thinking. Most contain a little bit of humor, as well. This one does. If you'd like to see all of my plays, skits, re-enactments, simulations and other lesson starters please visit my store

This is a short play meant to help enhance any lesson about life in Europe during the Feudal era, the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages - whatever you are doing in your class. I even use this play to help introduce the coming Great Age of Exploration. The play takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. This includes choosing parts, giving some instructions, handing out props (I use props gathered over the years, but not necessary). Parts can go to really any student in your classes. The play is great fo

All Hail the Glorious Leader! The Command or Planned Economic System

This is a great lesson to introduce the Command or Planned economy to students, whether this is a history or economics class. I run an activity in this lesson that simulates the frustrations and overall inefficiency of this type of economic system. Students learn what the system is about and its advantages and disadvantages. There are several documents and a power point aid contained in this lesson, plus instructions on how to run the simulation. We have a great time with it year after yea

The Great Age of Exploration - The Crusades and Trade with the East! A Play

A great skit to help introduce some of the reasons why there was an Age of Exploration. During the Crusades, a trade relationship develops between points in the middle east and with some Italian city-states. Of these, Venice benefited the most and will boast the largest market in Europe at this time. This skit helps explain how this develops in a humorous way. A great lesson starter! Have fun!

The "Ancient Ones", a play about the Ancient Pueblo (Anasazi)

Created by

I created this play for my classroom to engage my students more as we learned about Pre-Columbian civilizations, in this case the Ancient Pueblo. This play takes about 10-15 minutes to do and is meant as a supplement to your lesson. For this activity, I make a copy for each student. As the actors are doing the play, I have the other students use a highlighter and highlight any of the key words that we have already learned about the Anasazi, through our lesson, homework and discussion. Reader's Theater! Are you looking to enhance your lesson about the Pilgrim Story? This is a play that I have used for years in my classroom. It explains why the Pilgrims were in Holland, why they came to North America, events on board ship, and what happened after they arrived. This takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and your students will love it! Enjoy! :-) If you enjoyed this play, check this out: Plays and skits for early American History - Plymouth to the American Revolution
