Frame It! - A STEM Cross-Curricular Project with Fractions

In this project, students create pictures on index cards. These pictures may be from other classes; for example, they could be characters from an ELA novel, traits of a region in Social Studies, or aspects of animals/land masses studied in science. Students then use construction paper to create a matte in which to frame the three pictures. Students must use operations with fractions to determine the length and width of the required matte. This project can be done individually or in pairs.

Hold on, Baby! A STEM/PBL Project using Area

This project can be used in a multitude of ways: as a STEM project or a PBL activity with STEM, using fractions or decimals, by individual students or pairs of students. Students must use the given information and their knowledge of area to design and create a paper pattern for a device to hold a baby safely in a high chair. Included in the teacher notes is a link to a Google doc with the student portion of the project.

Let's Eat! A Project with Fractions and Decimals

In this project, students will calculate with both fractions and decimals. Students choose recipes, adapt the amount of ingredients for their class or other large group, and calculate the cost per student or group member. The project can easily be made cross-curricular by requiring students to choose recipes from a region they are studying in SS or from the setting in an ELA story or novel. I have posted the project in Word so that you can easily edit it to require 1, 2, or 3 recipes. The proje

The Vitruvian Man - An Activity Using Ratios (distance learning)

In this activity, students take measurements and calculate the same ratios as seen in the Vitruvian Man and then compare the two sets of ratios. The activity can be used for distance learning, especially if it is being used as a review activity. Students will need help with taking the measurements but should be able to complete the rest of the activity without parent/guardian help. Teachers can adjust/eliminate pieces of the activity to accommodate their own needs.

12 Days of Christmas - Fraction Style

In this activity, students use the traditional song, The 12 Days of Christmas, to multiply and divide with mixed numbers. Part of the activity's requirement is to write two paragraphs explaining why the student can give more than the usual number of items (when multiplying) and why the student can give less (when dividing). This requirement may be done in English/Language Arts class to create a cross-curricular activity. Included in the packet are ten choices of mixed numbers to use, both for mu

A Nest of Boxes - A STEM Project Using Ratios

Students work in groups to build a set of three nesting boxes using ratios. Students will also analyze the boxes and the ratios involving the edges, area of faces, and surface areas of the boxes. The project can easily be cross-curricular by having the themes of the nesting boxes reflect topics from ELA, Social Studies, and/or Science.
