Pie Chart / Circle Graph - Simple Template
Pie graphs can be tricky to make by hand when the sections aren't easy fractions of the pie. This simple template gives a circle marked off with 100 'tick lines' for easy graphing of percentages of the whole pie. A second template using dots is included too. A dot in the centre of the circle is included too, making it easy to use a ruler and draw lines out to the edge.

Word Fractions - Corny Pun
Students join fractions of words to create a new word. At the end, the new words create a sentence (the corny pun: "Two peanuts walked down a dark alley. One was a salted.") For example: First half of twin + last 1/2 of go: tw + o = two I created this for my grade 9 essentials math class, to review the very basics about what a fraction means, and they were all able to be successful and enjoy the pun at the end! "The Interview" - linear systems application problem from New York Times article
A humorous mathematical oversight in a New York Times article provides a great 'real life' linear systems application problem!
The problem involves the opening week rental and sales income from Sony's controversial movie 'The Interview'. The article claims that the number of rentals and sales is not known, but only the total profits from both, and the combined number of transactions... honestly, it's like they wrote the article for a math text book :)

I've been a high school math educator since 2008, teaching all grades 9 through 12, and all levels from university and college bound to essentials/workplace to special needs learners. My products and ideas have been gilded by the frontlines of my own classroom experience. I'm always looking for an innovative way to teach the subject I love!
Teaching style
Whenever possible, math should be driven by engaging problems that pull students into the concepts and skills I seek to teach. 'Fruitfully frustrated' is a good place to be :)
I enjoy writing and performing math raps (youtube CalfordMath), integrating Geometer's Sketchpad to bring dynamic understanding, gamifying learning (see my product 'Algebra Tile Factris'), and generally pushing creative limits to make math concepts accessible to my students.
I am aware of students' math stigmas and horror stories. I try to build on their natural math intuitions, sidestepping their perceived inability to 'do math' because they never won a class game of around-the-world with multiplication flash cards in grade 4.
