Students investigate the concepts of balanced and unbalanced forces by participating in a thumb wrestling competition. I like to put the winners bracket on the board. During this mini lab, students will gather qualitative and quantitative data. Students will predict and write a CER upon completion. A fun and hands on (pun intended) way to get kids thinking about science. CER poster included to help student clearly communicate.
Stars have fallen off of the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram and it is your students job to put them back so we can once again know their identity. Students will use clues to place star stickers on the included HR diagram. This activity can take as much or as little time as you'd like and can be adjusted for all levels of learners. Students love to solve the mystery and check to see if their HR diagram matches the teachers based on the clues they had to interpret. This extension is perfect to spark
These notes give students a side by side comparison as to how speed and acceleration are different when you graph motion. This notes page allows students to easily differentiate between these two concepts and clearly helps students identify those differences. Easy to use and easy to read. Perfect for the middle school classroom. You can color code the segments and the corresponding boxes. Also, you can put whatever notes you want your students to have in the boxes. This file does not currently h
This lab investigation shows how the concepts of competition impacts the availability of both abiotic and biotic factors in an ecosystem. Students will compete with other organisms throughout this investigation by collecting factors two different ways. Easy set up and even easier prep work on the teacher. Then, students will graph their results and answer higher order thinking questions. This lab works best with a debrief session upon completion. Activity comes with instructions, lab sheet, and
Students investigate the concepts of human impacts on ocean systems by revolving around the room to different stations. At each station, students will be expected to read and interpret the designated info graphic. There are two versions of the write up. One form has questions and places for responses and the other form requires students to make a claim, support with evidence, and provide reasoning for each info graphic. The student handouts can be printed off in booklet format. You will need to
These labels can be used in ANY grade at ANY level. Any easy way to transform the appearance and neatness of your white board. Pair these with some black electrical tape and you are set. I print these off, laminate them, and then stick a magnet on the back of them. This allows me to rearrange my white board set up. Included: Learning Target, Date, Objective (TEKS), Agenda, Materials, Reminders. If you need a different label for your white board and you want it to match, please just reach out and
Students investigate the concepts of short and long term environmental changes by completing a card sort activity. This activity is a perfect way to introduce these concepts and have students tap in to prior knowledge. Start off by having students write down (or research) the definitions or short and long term environmental changes. Students will then sort out cards based on where they think they belong on a comparison T-chart. Finally, students will complete the accompanying Venn diagram that c
Students will demonstrate their understanding of TEKS 8.8A by describing components of the universe such as stars. Students will have to sort out the stars into categories, which will pave the way for a deeper understanding when we teach the HR diagram.
This activity puts a fun spin on checking to see if your students understand the relationship between plate boundaries and crustal features. Students take turns rolling each die (there are 3 of them). They will record the name, the feature, and draw the picture. Once the table has been filled in, students will analyze if the 3 go together and provide justification. There are two versions of answer sheets that you can use to differentiate for varied levels of learners.
Students will demonstrate their understanding of rotation and revolution by exploring a website and completing a data table, Venn diagram, and creating illustrations to identify differences. This is a great assignment to complete as an extension after a quick introduction.
This activity is to be used as a guide with the Texas Gateways Human Dependence on Ocean Systems lesson. The lesson itself it not yet accessible on student iPads, but does work well with computers and chromebooks. You will need to set up an account in order to access the material at https://www.texasgateway.org/
This assignment page goes with each portion of the website and clearly targets 8.11D. What better way to target the TEKS than by using a resource straight from TEA.
Students will analyze satellite images from around the world to identify land and erosional features and predict how these features may continue to be reshaped by geological processes. Included in this resource is a two page WebQuest that asks students to navigate around a USGS website. Students will search for 8 different satellite images showing before and after views. Students will then answer questions that have been written specifically for each set of images. The emphasis is on analyzing c
In this activity students will use a QR code reader to access 6 videos. Each video students will view shows a chemical reaction. Students will watch the video and make qualitative observations, then determine the evidence that serves as an indication a reaction has occurred. There are 2 versions of this video web quest: one that is very structured and has check boxes and one that gives students space to write their own CER statements. These worksheets can be printed off in booklet format and stu
This worksheet requires students to plot stars on HR diagram and then answer a few analysis questions. A perfect assignment to have students complete as the HR diagram is being introduced. No prep, easy to print and go. Answer key included.
This set of “punny” classroom signs will grab your students attention as they gaze off during instruction. There are 15 different black, gray, and white signs that can be simply printed and glued on top of your favorite scrapbook paper that matches your room. Let the PUN times begin! If you have any questions or color requests please let me know and I'll create it! I will continue to work on expanding this set.
Now is your chance to get 10 Plate Tectonic resources at a significant savings to you. Included: *Notes *Interactive activities *Satellite Image Analysis resources *Games Well worth the price of this bundle.
This activity targets TEKS 8.9A. Students will create a timeline of the historical development of evidence that supports plate tectonic theory. This activity works best in groups and utilizes an encyclopedia reference from Britannica for students to pull research from.
This resources gives an explanation of A=P=E M-A=N and then provides you with a fill in table. Students are asked to use APE MAN to solve for PEN (protons, electrons, and neutrons). After all, the APE MAN does give us his PEN when we don't have one for class. You can easily change up the elements on the table. This can also be assigned through google drive.
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the concepts rotation and revolution by sorting example cards on a T-Chart and then complete a Venn diagram. This activity works best printed on colored paper and laminated. Make enough sets for groups of 3-4. You can copy the pages on different colors, so if a card turns up missing then you know where it needs to go. You can modify this activity to be done with the whole class by giving small groups 1-2 cards and have them sort and place on a big
Students discover the concept of convection currents, by making observations on how temperature impacts fluids. This inquiry lab uses hot plates, beakers, thermometers, cold water, rulers, and centimeters. You may have to adjust the temperature of your hot plates based on the time that students need to finish this activity. Some classes had to turn their hot plates up higher to reduce the amount of time that was needed. You will definitely want to try it out with your equipment first. If you ne
