Dear Mrs. LaRue is a great "First Day of School" read aloud! The illustrations and devious Ike set up a great writing prompt. Your kids are asked to write their own deceptive letter to someone about their (fictional or realistic) first day of school. They include a colorful illustration of the actual events and a black and white sketch of what the deceptive letter is portraying. Another great way to teach character perspective! Teaching style

Student centered learning environment. To have my students explore and discover in their own learning environment is very rewarding. To accomplish this, worksheets must be geared towards all learning strengths. I don't just assess with written work. Now, with the new Common Core on the way, we must learn to be resourceful and accommodating to all types of informal and formal assessments. Students are given more freedom and develop a sense of a personal drive to learn and enhance their own learning. Structure is important for students to be capable of handling their freedoms in the classroom and be successful in their own learning. You will see some classroom management pieces here, however, nothing works better than working together with your students to develop the "ideal" classroom setting. Reinforcing what you and your students desire in their learning environment will only build success. Common Core lessons--there will be many! This type of teaching is very student centered. So, be on the look out for activities which cause your children to...THINK!
