This measurement activity gives students an introduction to Pi. They will measure the diameter and circumference of a variety of cylinders to find Pi. Tables are included that allow students to measure in either inches, centimeters, or both. A teacher page is provided that can be used on the SmartBoard or made into an overhead. Also included is a vocabulary list and sample discussion questions.

Experience

20+ years of teaching, mostly 4th and 5th grade. But I have also taught 3rd and 1st grades and in the BSEP program for the US Army.

Teaching style

Very eclectic. I will use every trick I can think of, including singing, dancing, and cooking to help my students learn.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was Teacher of the Year at Aberdeen (NC) Elementary School, a PAEMST nominee, and was nominatd for a Golden Apple Award and a Carolina Hurricane Outstanding Teacher nominee.

My own education history

I received a BSEd degree from Mansfield University of PA. I also hold a certificate for teaching the academically gifted.

Additional biographical information

My hobbies include reading, reading on the beach, taking care of our three dogs and 2 cats, and participating with an 18th Century Living History group.
