This resource includes 18 days of fraction choral counting. This is a routine that I used with 4th graders to build number sense with fractions. It is super engaging, and leads to great conversation. I used this paired with BrainingCamp, and had a student adding/taking away fraction bars on a number line to help students visualize. You can learn more about choral counting online if you have not heard of this routine! I did this whole group.

This packet includes two days worth of fraction remediation (two blocks of 1 hour). Skills are broken into items that students can do with a calculator, and cannot do with a calculator (according to VA 4th Grade Math SOLs). Day 1- comparing, ordering, equivalent, mixed numbers, improper fractions. Day 2- adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators, simplifying answer. I used this resource with a remediation group. Students were required to justify with answer using a strategy such as a number line, benchmarks, or finding common denominators.

This activity is great for morning work, morning meeting, community building, or for your fractions unit! Student pick words to describe themselves and say what fraction of themselves that word is. They pick a color, fill in their key, and shade that amount of their fraction circle. For example: I am 2/8 kind. Students are provided a word bank, but I also encouraged students to come up with their own words!

In this practice students use their word and symbol bank to compare fractions with like denominators.

This sort allows students to sort fractions under their simplest form. Students sort equivalent fractions under 10 simplest form categories. Not all categories have the same amount of equivalent fractions, nor are all equivalent fractions listed. Great for independent practice. Can be printed on cardstock for reuse, or I often have students glue their sorts on a piece of colored paper so I can check them later. Or sort, check, and then glue. Students will add and subtract fractions that require them to find the common denominator. These resulting fractions do not need to be simplified, so that the focus can be on finding common denominators.

Students will estimate fraction sums and differences and place the cards under closer to 0, closer to 1/2, or closer to 1. A number line is provided, but other manipulatives would be helpful as well.

This practice is designed for 3rd grade students who are comparing fractions with models. In this practice students use the models to identify equivalent fractions.
