This was used for a group of 3rd graders working with partners in an independent on grade level small group. This activity is great for morning work, morning meeting, community building, or for your fractions unit! Student pick words to describe themselves and say what fraction of themselves that word is. They pick a color, fill in their key, and shade that amount of their fraction circle. For example: I am 2/8 kind. Students are provided a word bank, but I also encouraged students to come up with their own words!
This novel study is based on Virginia 4th grade SOLs. Comprehension questions include fill-in-the-blanks, open-ended, multiple choice, diagrams, and TEI questions. The skills focused on include: cause and effect, problem/solution, vocabulary, synonyms, main idea, author's purpose, characters, making inferences, drawing conclusions, predictions, suffix, supporting details, and sequencing. For this lesson students discuss how an organism's niche will change based on how the organism changes over time. Students compare and contrast the niche of a tadpole and frog, as well as a caterpillar and butterfly. Leads to great conversation about what niche means and how an organism's niche will change throughout its life. Based on 4th grade VA SOLs.
For this JIGSAW activity, I assigned students a plant part (stem, roots, or leaves) to read about with a partner. Students then came together with two other groups and shared what they learned about their assigned plant part. Works well with any plant parts articles.

This Holiday Homework is for over winter break. Students complete and shade one a night. 20 activities are included. This was made for 4th graders, but could easily work for 3rd as well. A few fill-in-the blanks are included where I put our schools online math and reading websites. I also included a blank for the due date and teachers name. Some activities are meant to be less time consuming than others. Enjoy!
Includes two graphic organizers with the life cycle of a butterfly and frog. Information is filled in, and boxes are given to draw images to match. I had my students make the images out of play-doh and lay them in the boxes to make it a little more fun! Based on 4th grade VA SOLs. (My students looked at images to help them draw and create)
