About the store
My journey as an educator began in the United States Navy where I taught algebra, trigonometry and advanced electronics. After further training I began developing classroom curricula, programmed instruction and assessments. Later I worked in industry directing a large and diverse training department for an international packaging company. After 8 years I gave up my executive position to teach in a Title 1 school district on Chicago's South Side. I quickly became lead teacher, and heavily involved in district curricula matters and teacher professional development. Since then I have worked with Governor's State University mentoring new teachers and providing professional development, and I have created a business providing teaching materials across the internet via my website - commoncoremath.net.

Teaching style

I develop classroom lessons based on engaging as many students as possible through multiple intelligences. Each new topic is presented using a combination of cooperative learning, guided and independent practice, audio/visual input, and hands-on activities. I use feedback to hone lessons and constantly try new methods. I am not a fan of "high-stakes testing", but I appreciate the direction provided by well written standards. Many teachers feel they "know what the kids need to learn". I appreciate the input of experts. Standards provide assurance we are working on the right things at the right time. I believe they make a teacher's job easier. It is important that standards are reviewed and continually improved.
