Volume of a Rectangular Prism Computer Activity

Students will use common software (word processor and draw program) to investigate, create, and interpret the formula for the volume of a rectangular prism. This activity will keep them focused while they stack cubes to form their rectangular prism. Slide 15 is a video demonstration. The computer lab can be a wonderful environment for fun constructivist teaching.

Additional biographical information

As a Title I teacher in the East St. Louis (Illinois) public schools, I used models and representations to teach mathematics to gifted and remedial students in grades 1 through 8 for more than thirty-five years. While instructing entire classrooms in a computer lab environment, I created a unique teaching strategy that supports the math standards and increases students' computer proficiency levels. The activities use common software found on most computers. I presented this strategy for professional development workshops at the St. Clair County (Illinois) Regional Office of Education.
