This project comes with many variations to differentiate for students of all levels. The goal of the project is for students to plan a fair, either individually or in groups. Once they have planned the fair the answer keys tell you how many people actually attended and what activities they participated in. Students then do the math to find their real profits and revenue and reflect on the whole event by creating a presentation summarizing what happened and what they might do differently next tim
In this activity students get the chance to try to come up with their own solution in teams or individually and can practice their critical thinking skills with the printable manipulatives included. This activity is a good chance for students to think very abstractly about ratios. Primarily I made this project because I found the process of a 3:2 Pulldown to be fascinating. This is the process by which film, captured at 24 frames per second, is converted to video, filmed at 30 frames per second.
This project gives students the chance to visualized division by 2 , 4, and 8 that may result in a fraction. There are 8 "orders" or problems for students to work through. This is most ideally done in small groups so students can practice their mathematical communication. There are two pages not shown in the thumbnails, the student explanation/story and the orders page. The magic of this activity happens in the work done on scratch paper by students. There is a lot to gain from practicing turnin
This brief presentation gives a short history of Pi, a slide of the digits of Pi, two activities to help students calculate Pi, and a writing activity relating to Pi. Happy Pi Day!!
This is a group activity that can be a fun opportunity for students to think about factors and work with their friends.
