I have been a special education teacher for the past twenty-five years. I am a very strong supporter of creating rich educational experiences for all students. However, students need access to instructionally appropriate materials in order to benefit from such an environment. I have always been frustrated by the lack of resources available to special education teachers who are supporting students in such rigorous educational environments. My lessons, outlines and study guides reflect years of work centering on creating positive and meaningful educational experiences for my students.

Daily emails are a great way to have students practice their writing and communication skills. In my classroom, I have a number of copies printed, laminated and stored in a pocket chart for easy access. We vary our emails based on the activities we take part in each day. You can insert text boxes to model for your students as well.

This scrapbooking activity is extremely versatile so that you can choose how you would like to use it with your students. This product includes:

Compound Words
Getting older students to work towards improving their spelling skills is no easy feat. By the time they reach middle school, struggling readers and writers have spent countless hours trying to memorize spelling words for their weekly tests just to forget them days later! I have always been a fan of Patricia Cunningham’s Phonics They Use and Month by Month Phonics books. One activity I learned from Ms. Cunningham’s work that my students are particularly fond of is the study of compound words.

The Dragonling and A Dragon in the Family Reading Response Guides
It took me many years to find a fantasy that my struggling readers could access independently. The Dragonling, by Jackie French Koller, and its sequel, A Dragon in the Family, have been favorites. The novels are brief, but they do incorporate many of the elements of fantasy that is studied by the entire class. The chapters are short, which makes it easier for students to provide specific evidence to support their answers to the guided questions included in each reading guide.

Journalism for Struggling Writers
Journalism is a favorite unit for our readers and writers for good reason- its high interest and gets them moving!. Many kids appreciate the formulaic nature of journalism and find it a relatively easy genre to write. This is one of my favorite units to teach to my struggling learners. With practice and support, students develop an understanding of the structure of writing articles. My own education history
I have a BA in history and a MS in Special Education. I am certified to teach special education K-12 and Social Studies 5-12 .
Additional biographical information
Much of the work I produce is the result of a challenge I face with one of my own students, even my children! I love to problem solve and collaborate. If you have a particular challenge in your own classroom, I would love to lend my expertise!
