This is my 5th year teaching and I love it! I find myself constantly reinventing the wheel, as education and children are forever changing! I need NEW each year, so that both myself and my students are exciting about all that we are learning!
This is a culminating or introductory project for grades 3-6 when studying the United States. Changes can be made on the original hand out depending on what your grade level is studying. Students use the shapes of states in a particular region to build a monster for that region. For example, the Northeast Region Monster might have a head in the shape of Massachusetts, a body in the shape of Maine, arms in the shape of NH and Vermont, etc. I did make an example for the students as a model.
Once
In SMART NOTEBOOK flip chart, students will take part in an introductory lesson to picture writing, which can lead later to more creative writing. Students will use pictures, brainstorm words, and create 6 word memoirs/titles for each picture. This activity fosters word choice, as well as ideas when focusing on the 6 traits of writing. Fun and lots to do from here!
Students then focus on the author's/illustrator's message when being asked what they think was the message of the artist.
