A April SIOP unit includes engaging lessons with research based strategies in which students focus on family structure, the four seasons, spring images and learn a spring song, investigate flowers (includes math), symmetry 1 and symmetry 2, visit a nursing home, and give a presentation to the nursing home through songs and gift giving. After reading the book titled, The Sunflower by Simon Weisenthal, students will be able to demonstrate comprehension of the concept of forgiveness by writing an essay, personal narrative, or research paper using the given writing prompts and questions. Students will be able to revise essays, narratives, or research papers by applying rough draft checklists or rubrics and peer reviews using the 6 Traits of Writing. After exploring reading strategies, student will select two strategies to apply to reading The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal. Students will demonstrate knowledge of reading strategies creating a ScreenR or YouTube video. To create the video, students will select a short text (page or paragraph) for each strategy and will model how to apply the strategy for classmates (audience).

Pk - 1st: 48 Reading/ Language Arts classroom lessons/ activities connected to 12 books written by Ruth Kraus. As a part of an author study, students learn vocabulary and phonemic awareness, engage in hands on and writing activities that help students make personal and real life connections with stories and promote interaction with classmates and incite creativity.

Students will be able to identify aspects of The Day of the Dead cultural holiday. Using collaborative reading, books, articles, and research, students will create a presentation for classmates. Presentations will be presented by creating a poster board to display the different ways in which the holiday is celebrated. Students will conclude their presentations by describing how they would like their relatives to celebrate the Day of the Dead to honor them when the time comes...

Shared Reading: Before, during, and after reading Grandfather's Journey by Allan Say, students will answer questions that are engaging and promote discussion. Students will participate in activities that help them make text-self connections.
