A Number Talk is a whole group activity that takes 5-10 minutes. It can be done at the beginning of the math lesson or the end of the lesson. The purpose of a Number Talk is to help students develop computational fluency and number sense. During a Number Talk, the teacher only serves as a recorder and facilitator. Let the kids do the teaching.

Using Skittles candies to learn about ratios

Math Talk Stems

Students create a city (city map) including 2-D geometric shapes. This is a great culminating activity. It also includes a simple example and rubric.

Common Core Math Practices in student friendly language

Use this file to create a wall display of important time during your day. You can post the clock to teach analog time and the rectangle below to teach digital time. Could also be used as a center.

This project requires students to map out their room including area and perimeter. They have to calculate the cost of paint and carpet for their room as well as draw the room.

Tapatan is a strategy game, similar to Tic Tac Toe. The object is to get three markers in a row, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Each player has three playing pieces. Two players begin with an empty board. They take turns placing one marker per turn on any empty space. If there is not a winner after players have positioned their three pieces, they take turns moving along a line, one space at a time.
