Curiosity Shift

Students will learn and reinforce vocabulary for the following parts of an apple: skin, stem, flesh, core, and seeds. The teacher cuts actual apples into pieces and discusses with students these parts and corresponding vocabulary. Students take a turn matching the paper vocabulary words with the correct apple parts. Students will identify the inside and outside parts of a pumpkin. The outside of the pumpkin opens like a flap book to reveal the inside! For the lesson, students will observe an actual pumpkin, then they will color and label their pumpkin pages. Students learn about four different apple varieties: Red Delicious, McIntosh, Golden Delicious, and Granny Smith. They describe and sample each apple, then color it. This activity may be done solo or along with the book How Do Apples Grow? by Betsy Maestro. (The book shows these four apples when explaining that apples are different colors because of how sunlight helps change the skin color of some apples.)
