Power Point - Introduction to Symbolism and Allusion as Hidden Messages
Every year, we kick off our 8th Grade "Theme and Symbol" unit with this Power Point presentation on hidden message in popular logos. The students are incredibly engaged when they realize that the world is communicating with them in ways they never saw before.

MACBETH by William Shakespeare: Shakespearean Lyrics Warm Ups (5 days worth)
As part of my Macbeth unit, I like to start classes with warm ups that involved the students translating Shakespearean language. What better way to do this than by taking popular song lyrics, writing them in Shakespearean language, and challenging the students to translate them back! Metaphor Poems PowerPoint Presentation
This presentation is an introduction to Metaphor Poetry. The introductory slides focus on defining metaphors and similes. As the presentation continues, students are introduced to connotation and denotation, with on emphasis on how metaphor is concerned with connotations.

Experience
Currently, I serve as a Literacy Coach for teachers in the middle grades (6th-8th). I have specific experience teaching ELA in 7th grade, 8th grade, 10th grade, and also in teaching AP Language and Composition to mixed classes of grades 10-12.
Teaching style
My students come from diverse backgrounds in an urban school. They often do not believe that they can change the direction of their lives and I believe part of my job is to inspire the possibilities along with teaching the content. Because of this, my teaching style is rigorous and loose at the same time. I let the students guide the direction of the day, while building challenging activities that are engaging and important.
I am currently a Literacy Coach, spending time teaching lessons in all of the middle grades.. Many of my lessons develop test taking strategies along with improving comprehension, vocabulary, and motivation.
I continue to develop Standards-based lessons preparing myself and my students for the rigors of the Massachusetts ELA standards.
Awards & shining teacher moments
National Junior Honor Society selected me as their "Teacher of the Year" in 2016 because of my ability to motivate and inspire students with my lessons and teaching style.
I earned the Edward Egan Medal in the Arts in my senior year at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY.

I have a BA in English and an MA in Education, focused on secondary school English.

Before teaching, I worked in retail management for 21 years - discovering daily throughout my career that my associates (think: "students") were the most important part of my job.
