We do an Author Study every year on Eric Carle. After reading Pancakes, Pancakes with the class, have the kids cut out the sequencing sentences and put them in order. Teach them how to draw a corresponding picture with each sentence to better understand where our food comes from and how recipes turn into food!
U or V Week - Things that grow under the ground.
We have a kitchen at our school and actually roast all the vegetables up ourselves and do a taste test.
We used this graph during "V" week in our classroom and discussed healthy eating and vegetables. We cut up all of these vegetables and gave each child a sampler plate. We tried each one by one, deciding good adjectives to describe each. At the end, we let the kids vote on which their favorite was. We graphed it on our teacher board in front of the room, and the kids transposed that information onto their own worksheet. We then asked leading questions afterwards. For example, "Which had the
