Davis's Dive

This is a packet to use with nonfiction or expository texts. Children choose a research topic and look at the nonfiction features to learn more. There is a title page, table of contents, different kinds of, interesting facts about, parts of a, how to, illustration and caption, and works cited. The preview is generated so it looks crooked. It's not, and it's in Word so you can change it around.

I use this for children that are reading chapter books. They create a project and then present it to the class. The second page is a list of 16 projects with visuals to choose from. They can use one page to help them prepare for presentation. The last page is a checklist for them and where I put their grade. Lots of resources were used to create this. It's much easier to do it this way. :-)

I have my kids use this before they even begin a word problem, along with my "problem solving rubric". It allows them to talk with partners about their understanding of the problem and what action to take. Children don't have to write under each one, but it needs to be understood before solving the problem. The kids are really doing great with this! Saves time!

I put this in my kids' "Daily Folders" and it has a guideline for parents and kids to use to know what questions to ask on fiction and nonfiction books.

This is a half sheet they can glue in their journals after reading a book. They make text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections. This helps them really pay attention to what they are reading and helps their comprehension. There are 2 to a page!

This is an easy, short way to send Flat Stanley if you are crunched on time. It's neat for the kids to see what he writes back and see the picture of him at the new place. You can write in the address, school, and place.

This is a great bookmark to use to reflect on reading.

This has explanation of each element, along with differences between summary, main idea, and theme.

This is a big version of what the kids use in their journals. Helps think through the problems.

I created this after reading the book. I wanted it to be easy for people to do an activity using him. I attached his picture for your kids to color as well. You can turn this into a writing activity for your kids and use this as a model as well. The letter suggests 3 places he will visit in the United States.

This was created to help me know the harder questions to ask when I get stuck. Top left corner are the easiest questions and the bottom right are the hardest. It gets harder when you go to the right or down. it's great. I have shared this with my whole campus and they use it.

We used these after teaching all the senses.

Use this when kids are absent to keep track of what they missed. I have students at their group write the stuff down and staple any sheets to the back. It holds them accountable.

I use this about once a week. I walk around the room and if they have a clean desk, they get one with "fairy dust" (aka...glitter). There are 2 to a page to save paper!
