Fun before/after Thanksgiving break project. Students practice subtracting and adding with decimals, calculating percent and interest, as well as learn financial literacy (understanding the dangers of credit cards) in this simple activity. Note: students will need access to internet to find the online deals (or have students bring in their own discounted ads)
This project is intended to be used for students to apply their skills of multiplying decimals by whole numbers, adding/subtracting decimals, and analyzing graphs/data to the real-world. To track the stock market, students can go online and type in the company's name in Google. The price of the stock should pop up.
Students practice their estimation (rounding skills) as well as addition and subtraction skills by designing a new school kitchen. They will have to stay within a budget and estimate the cost of the total kitchen. They will then calculate how much money the will have left over and determine which foods to buy for the first week of school.
Students practice calculating simple interest by calculating the interest on their mortgage and car payments. Perfect for 5th, 6th, and 6th graders! Practice converting from percents to decimals and multiplying.
