Want to create a student-led learning environment? Give your students the opportunity to practice their graphing skills as well as their ability to come to conclusions with this activity. In this activity, students graph linear functions and use their equations to discover the relationships between the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines ALL ON THEIR OWN!

This activity provides students the opportunity to analyze a catchphrase or slogan of a company. They convert the catchphrase into a conditional statement and use that to determine the converse, inverse, and contrapositive statement. The presentation at the end is an analysis of the validity of each of those statements.

This standard is a tough one to cover, so I built this activity to help lead my students through it. I split up the class into groups of threes and have them work through it at a whiteboard. I roam the room and listen to their discussions and try to help only if there is no activity within the group. If you are interested in a thinking classroom, this is an easy one to try.

Domain and Range are so tough for my students to understand. The first part of this activity is a mini lesson where either the teacher or student-led groups discover how to draw boxes on the axes to help write the domain and range in interval notation. Want to show your students an application of quadratic functions? Take them to the gym with this activity, play a couple of games of knockout, and show them how to model their shot using quadratic functions. This activity is designed for algebra 2 students as it does have a tiny bit of trig (the students just use a formula with a trig function in it). This activity leads them through it and works great with groups of three.

I use this activity as a way to introduce my algebra 2 students to an application of function composition, proving that two functions are inverses. The activity is math heavy, so I recommend that it is used for your more advanced students, but the challenge is good for all.

In this activity, a group of three students will each solve ten quadratic equations, using either factoring, completing the square, or quadratic formula. When a student finishes a problem, they will write their solutions in the correct spot on the answer sheet. When all three students have finished the same question, all three of their answers should be the same.

This is a very mathy activity where advanced students get to learn the formal proof process for showing parts of the closure of the set of complex numbers with respect to addition and multiplication. This is only for an advanced class and is meant as a challenge to get them to think of math as a language of understanding and not just the applications of numerical values.

This minilesson is a great way to guide students through the whys and hows for solving absolute value equations. Use the Check for Understanding at the end to get feedback from your students on what they learned.

This standard is a really tough one to cover because it is worded so unnaturally and is found within a lot of different units. My way to cover this is in algebra 1 by using the simple example of the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle and then giving the students a couple of examples to work with that are familiar to them. Try it out!

This is an all time favorite during my data unit for algebra 1. The students love to argue about Monopoly strategies, so I made an activity where they get to analyze a strategy for winning at the game. The activity took me a while to make because you will notice that (1) the monopoly board reads in one direction and (2) the print version of this makes it super easy for students to flip back and forth between the board and the table/graph. In this activity, students must match slopes, slope between points, linear functions, and graphs of lines with each other so that they match. It is a great way for students to practice translating between all of these different representations of slope.

This activity is a wonderful way to introduce Algebra II students how to derive a formula by testing two different versions of the quadratic formula. It is heavy on the math notation, but don't let that scare you. If you can convince your students to try this, they can really show growth with their understanding of quadratic functions.

This standard is very hard to cover. This activity is an attempt to use student language to help them learn how to derive a formula that is really nice to know. I would recommend that you lead them through this activity, but if your students are more advanced, let them attack it in groups.

I found that my students never truly understood the definition of a solution in terms of a function with regards to a table, graph, ordered pairs, and a function. This activity also includes a Check for Understanding at the end.
