Solving Equations on the Balance Scale (Part I)

Created by
Doctor Math
22 Interactive Slides! This resource introduces students to conceptual understanding of solving equations by giving students exposure to and practice with the balance scale model. Students learn through practice and exploration how to represent equations on the balance scale and how to use the Addition and Subtraction Properties of Equalities to maintain balance on the scale (equation). Students will solve equations on the balance scale using interactive manipulatives, including algebra tiles.

Solving Equations on the Balance Scale (Part II)

24 Interactive Slides! This resource promotes students' conceptual understanding of solving equations by giving students exposure to and practice with the balance scale model. This resource builds on Part I by including "zero pairs," and demonstrating how students can maintain balance on the scale (or equation) by creating zero pairs to solve equations, and can be used as a stand-alone (without the introduction of Part I) if students are ready. Students learn through practice and exploration ho

Quadratic Functions Sorting Activity

Created by
Doctor Math
This resource provides students with cards that challenge them to view quadratic functions through a variety of forms and models. The .pdf file is created to print and cut cards from four different groups, for students to use for extra support or extra challenge, or in a collaborative sorting and classifying activity. The color-coded task cards are arranged into: Quadratic Functions in Standard Form, Quadratic Equations in Intercept Form, Quadratic Functions in Vertex form, and Graphs of Quadrat

Experience

I have been a math teacher and educator for more than 30 years. I was a classroom math teacher, a district math coach, and am now a University Supervisor of Teacher Education, working with preservice math teachers. Teaching style

I am a firm believer in discovery and inquiry lessons. My question at the end of every lesson is: Who Did the Math? If it wasn't the students, it wasn't a great lesson!

My own education history

I have a Ph.D. in Education from Claremont Graduate University.

Additional biographical information

I am the proud Mama of two daughters, both of whom are educators. My greatest joy is spending time with my grandkids!
