I taught in NYC public schools for 9 years. I mostly taught high school math grades 9-12. Then I served as an education administrator for two years before heading back to school to earn my PhD. The materials I have posted on TPT were developed while I was teaching high school. I hope you find them to support your teaching.
This is a survival scenario based on the popular novel The Hunger Games. It's a great team building activity. Team members work together to decide which items they should keep in order to survive. The items were assigned numerical values based on their potential usefulness. The team with the most points "wins." Of course, there may be differing opinions on the usefulness of the items, so the point values can be easily adapted to fit your class. My decisions for the point values were based on it
This lesson plan was designed for my Algebra class to celebrate Earth Day through the discovery of the Fibonacci Sequence and the Golden Ratio in nature. This file includes a lesson plan and activity/lab worksheet. This was rated as an Exemplary Resource on New York City ARIS. New and Improved: Aligned to CCSS, Guiding Questions, Solutions added to the lab CCSS.Math.Content.HSN-RN.B.3 Explain why the sum or product of two rational numbers is rational; that the sum of a rational number and an i
In order to supplement the new informational text shift in the CCSS, I created this rubric to guide my students when responding to informational text in my business math class. I have also included my class work and homework rubric that you may find useful.
These are instructions for students to create a brochure on percents. This is a great tool for assessing students' knowledge of percents after they have completed a unit on working with and solving percent problems.
The final products are also great for displaying student work--perfect for parent teacher conferences!
This accompanies the Geogebra Photo Functions lesson plan and tutorial. The geogebra tutorial is only included with the lesson plan. This lesson includes an activity that allows students to explore functions using technology by inserting a photo into interactive geometry software and finding a function that will trace an object in the photo.
These are student instructions and handouts for a stock market unit.
Included:
Instructions on how to use Investopedia's FREE stock market game
A portfolio worksheet for students to track their stocks
A table for students to fill in when researching which stocks to purchase
The unit is intended to last at least 5 weeks and take up about two 45 minute class periods per week.
Lesson plans will need to be developed, and I recommend having at least one prior lesson on the history of the stock mar
This is a classroom management tool that I have been developing over the years. The bundle includes:
Description of Math Money Incentives and how to implement.
A hand out for students describing ways to earn math money and a price list of rewards.
Math Money printable (two sides)
Math Money Homework Pass printable
This works great with younger students. I have used it successfully with 6th grade, 9th grade and 10th grade.
I have a daily grade for my students. The daily grade is worth 5 points--when students come to class on time, hand in homework, complete classwork, and have good behavior the entire class, they earn all five points. I developed this tool to help with classroom management and keep track of daily grades. I also use it to record grades. I keep it on a clip board and walk around and take notes during class. If students are off task, I mark points off and notify them. This often encourages them to re

Identify the end behavior of functions.
Determine whether a function is increasing or decreasing on an interval.

CCSS IF B.4: For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of the relationship
This lesson integrates technology to allow students to explore families of functions. Students must know translations of quadratic functions in order to complete this activity. Further knowledge of functions is valuable but not necessary.
This lesson also requires the use of Geogebra--a free interactive geometry software. A web version is available, but the instructions are specific for the Windows downloaded version. This lesson could easily be adapted to any Geogebra version.

This activity was created for use with a graphing calculator to explore quadratic graphs and their translations. This lesson plan was rated as an Exemplary Resource on New York City's ARIS.
This is a homework pass printable. I like to give out homework passes as incentives for exceptional behavior. You may also want to use them as a form of extra credit or academic rewards. There are 10 passes on one page.
This is the Smart Board File that accompanies the Exploring End Behavior and Monotonicity lesson plan and worksheet. You will need to buy both if you want the worksheet and solutions.
This lesson and worksheet was created for students with special needs in collaboration with my team teacher. It really helped my students who needed more structure be able to solve multi-step equations.

Experience
I taught in NYC public schools for 9 years. I mostly taught high school math grades 9-12. Then I served as an education administrator for two years before heading back to school to earn my PhD. The materials I have posted on TPT were developed while I was teaching high school. I hope you find them to support your teaching.
Teaching style
I implement student-centered instruction. Students in my classes are given many choices and expected to provide feedback to guide future lessons. This adds to the rigor of learning high level mathematics.
Awards & shining teacher moments
My favorite teaching moments are when students visit after they graduate and ask me for help. They often regret not paying more attention while they were in my class, but I know they learned more than the subject area--they learned how to be resourceful and how to solve problems--even if they have to ask me for help to get it done.
