About the store
I have taught in urban and rural settings as well as all levels of student (gifted to learning disabled.) From 2001 to the present I have worked at the North Carolina Governor's School, a residential program for gifted and talented high school students. From 2001-2006, then 2009-present, I have taught English/Humanities for grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. (I did not teach from 2007-2009 because I was a full time PhD student.) I have taught Honors 9th grade English (genre study), Honors 10th grade English (world literature and writing), 10th grade English (inclusion class), Honors 11th grade English (American literature), 11th grade English (inclusion), Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, SAT prep, Philosophy, General Conceptual Development, Independent Inquiry, and Adolescent Social-Emotional Development. From 1998-2005 I taught for The Princeton Review. I conducted classes in SAT and GRE test preparation. Teaching style

I use a variety of teaching styles. I tend to blend seminar/discussion, small group work, and interdisciplinary assignments to form most of my lessons. I adhere to the principles of contrastive grammar, writers' workshop, and CPS (Creative Problem Solving).

Awards & shining teacher moments

I currently hold North Carolina teaching licenses in English (9-12) and Gifted Education (K-12). I am a member of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), and Phi Beta Kappa. I have presented at NCTE (topic: educational technology), NAGC (topics: curriculum development, residential programs, and social-emotional development), and the North Carolina Association for the Gifted and Talented. In 2007, I was invited to present at an international education conference in Athens, Greece.

My own education history

I hold a PhD in English education from New York University. My research focus is gifted education. Additionally, I earned a Master's (M.Ed) in English education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. My Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) is also from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I triple majored in English education, history, and gender studies. My undergraduate education was financed by the North Carolina Teaching Fellows scholarship program; my PhD was financed by a Founders Fellowship from NYU.

Additional biographical information

I have designed and taught the following courses: Independent Inquiry; The Sociology of Deviance; Law, Order, and Ethics; Foucault 101; Detective Fiction; Noir in Film and Text. I have created and conducted professional development workshops on the following topics: teaching gifted adolescents, understanding the social and emotional development of gifted adolescents, differentiated instruction, and teaching ethics in the public schools.
