Valentine's Heart Card
I've created an anatomically correct heart "Valentine's" card for students to cut, color, and assemble. So that they can give away their card, there is an attached table for students to fill out with labeling, descriptions, and the pathway of blood. Habitat Design Project
My 7th graders love creating new hands-on models! I've taken the traditional diorama assignment to a bit more advanced level so ensure my kiddos are genuinely learning the ecology concepts. I've designed this to be the final part of our "Design an Endangered Species Zoo", though it can be completed entirely on it's own. Body Tissues Microscope Lab
While learning about the human body systems my students always spend a class period investigating a variety of body tissue slides under the microscopes. They love any chance to use the microscopes and this provides a bit of "free exploration" while guiding them to connect their findings to the 7th grade standards! The open response questions means very little lab prep for the teacher- one set of copies as a reference and any slides from body tissues!

Experimental Design- AlkaSeltzer Lab Instructions
Middle school students explore experimental design/the scientific method while investigating how they can change the speed of which Alka-Seltzer tablets dissolve. Students choose from different versions of the lab so that they can share findings with the class. I typically provide the accompanying lab report template so that students are clear about their expectations.

Pumpkin Decomposition Experiment
I designed this ongoing experiment so that my 7th grade science students can witness the decomposition process in a meaningful and memorable way! The first week of October I carve two small pumpkins, name them, and set up closed systems to monitor weekly. I've created a lab report so that students incorporate the scientific method. I've also created a diagram and worksheet requiring students to model matter cycling within the pumpkin ecosystem.

Nervous System Terms, Study Guide, and Tests

Editable Science Research Paper
I've struggled with finding an assignment detailed enough that I could guide my 7th graders through composing a scientific research project on a topic of their choice....so I created one! This editable activity includes the introductory letter to students and parents as well as the assignment timeline and rubric for grading the final research paper. GATTACA movie discussion questions
During my genetics unit with 7th and 9th graders I show the movie GATTACA (1997) to kick off a class discussion about ethical issues with genetics. Rather than have simple “are you watching” questions, I provide argument based questions to encourage students having passionate discussion in groups. After holding small group discussions during the movie, we hold a Socratic seminar the day after the movie so that students have time to share ideas and process opposing viewpoints.

Teaching style

She really is my hero and I strive to give my kids as many authentic, hands-on science experiences as possible. I want them to fall in love with the scientific process and constantly ask "but why? how? what happens next? what if?". The more they talk to each other, engage in debate, and offer new information they've found on their own, the better class it is!!
