Students will practice math skills relating to the dimensions of the Golden Gate bridge. This allows students to put their math skills to work in the real world!

This set of 24 practice cards will help get your 4th grader ready for the place value portion of the math STAAR test. These task cards are created from previously released STAAR exam questions. Use them as a warm-up, group work, or individual work. They could also be used as homeroom if needed.

Do you have students that are always finished early and want more to do? These activities can work for a variety of learners, but this list is compiled from my experience with GT students/fast finishers.

Brainstorm with the students several places in the U.S. that they would like to visit. Divide students into groups. Then allow 15-20 minutes for the groups to work together and choose their destinations. Remind them to consider time and amount of money they have to spend. Each group should choose a different destination. At this point give each student a copy of the Dream Vacation Rules sheet and have them get started.

This activity ties is great when learning about the Olympics! Students rotate through 6 stations using estimation. The winner is determined by who has the lowest difference overall.

Students will work in groups to shop for the needed items and calculate the cost for a dinner for eight people. This activity can be extended by having students use Excel to create their spreadsheet and calculate expenses.

Kids love video games so let them be the gamer and practice finding area and perimeter. Once they finish this sheet, have them create their own! Being able to create their own problems will show their true understanding of the concept. GAME ON!
