About the store

Experience

I have worked for 8 years as a Primary Computing / Computer Science teacher, and have taught the subject with students from Pre-K (2 Years +) to Year 8 (12/13yo). Prior to that, I spent 3 years as a classroom teacher in KS1 and 2, and before that 3 years as a teaching assistant.

Teaching style

I enjoy making Computer Science interesting by tapping into students' creativity whilst developing their technical skills. As well as creating games, I enjoy teaching pupils how to create digital art and music using a range of tools such as Krita or GIMP, Beepbox or Sonic Pi. I am keen on collaboration, and in my classroom encourage pupils to walk around the room looking for answers. I also emphasize that trying and making mistakes are far more valuable than "getting it right" - this is a recurring theme in my class! As far as possible, I am also keen to add humour to my lessons and to collaborate with other subjects on shared projects.

My own education history

I was born in Ireland, went to school in the UK and did my undergraduate degree in History online whilst working as a TLA. In education, I have worked in Egypt and currently work in Thailand.

Additional biographical information

I have always loved playing games, and have made two of my own. One I use as a teaching tool to help pupils learn how to use a mouse. The other was a project with my then 5yo daughter. I am a very keen bass guitarist and have been playing since I was 16. I have played in a few bands and currently use my CCA time in school to help organise student bands and get them opportunities to perform.
