I have been a teacher for 19 years in both public and private schools working to develop materials that are engage and content driven for all learners.
In this lab, students will use a penny to demonstrate a single replacement lab. This lab includes pre and post lab questions that not only focus on chemical reactions, but the historical and economic point of view of the penny and why it is no longer pure copper.
This activity is a supplement after chromosomal mutations have been introduced. Students are given a set of chromosomal mutations to select from and the website to research the type of chromosomal mutations that occur and where they occur within the DNA. The activity can easily be modified for advanced learners by assigning extra mutations.
In this inquiry-based lab, students will investigate how daphnia can be affected by everyday chemicals such as nicotine, caffeine, ethylene glycol, and alcohol. Students will first research the role of stimulants versus depressants within the human body and make a hypothesis as to how the chemical will affect the daphnia. This is a great inquiry level for an upper-level science course such as Biochemistry.
In this activity, students will review the concepts of alleles, meiosis, phenotypes, and genotypes to create a unique baby turtle. The activity come with nine different allele sets for a class to create nine unique turtles. This activity is adapted from the dragon genetic activity.
This interactive mole lab allows doe students to use everyday objects to see what a mole of a substance looks like. If students are not in class, a data sheet is also given for those students with pictures of the lab.
This is virtual lab, students will complete a yeast lab. The weblink is supplied and the activity sheet guides students through the activity and required students to answer questions in order to demonstrate mastery.
This is virtual lab, students will create a protein and then complete substitution and frameshift mutations to see how the protein changes. The weblink is supplied and the activity sheet guides students through the activity and required students to answer questions in order to demonstrate mastery.
This is virtual lab, students will watch elodea cells in a hypertonic and hypotonic solution. Then students will have a set of lab questions in order to demonstrate mastery.
In this activity, students will explore their favorite prepackaged foods to determine which is the best. This activity will take students through how to find and understand the three of the biological molecules on their food labels: proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates; as well as calories, sodium, and vitamins.
In this review worksheet, students will focus on balance chemical reactions, types of chemical reactions, net ionic equations, predicting products, single and double replacement reactions using activity series and solubility rules.
This virtual aspirin lab will allow students to make and purify aspirin using a virtual website. The document includes the website as well as activities for students to complete in order to demonstrate proficiency and completion of the virtual lab. This lab would be a great option for remote or at-home learners who cannot participate in the aspirin lab or a pre-lab to actually completing the aspirin lab within a laboratory setting.
This is virtual lab, students will create a protein, by virtually completing translation and transcription. The weblink is supplied and the activity sheet guides students through the activity and required students to answer questions in order to demonstrate mastery.
This is virtual lab, students will watch a video on how photosynthesis is affected by light. Data is given within the video. After students watch the video, they will collect data and answer lab questions and complete a summary paragraph in order to demonstrate mastery.
In this virtual lab, students will identify mitosis in an onion root and whitefish. The link for the mitosis lab is supplied and the directions are supplied to help students navigate the site as well as questions, to ensure the students complete the virtual lab with evidence.
This is virtual lab, students will translate a protein and then see how a mutation affects a protein by translating a mutation within the DNA. This virtual lab does a good job reviewing missense, nonsense, and silent mutations. The weblink is supplied and the activity sheet guides students through the activity and required students to answer questions in order to demonstrate mastery.
This project is designed as a summative assessment for the chirality unit in a Biochemistry course. Students select their own chiral molecule used within the drug industry to research its effects, as well as the side effects of its enantiomer. This project includes the expectations and a rubric for grading.
This activity can be used to preview enzymes or activity after enzymes have been taught. Students will watch a video about the application of enzymes and how they can decompose trash and then students will answer a series of questions based upon the video. The wrap-up section of the activity offers a written response where students need to integrate enzyme vocabulary from the lesson with the video in a Collins Type II writing prompt.
In this lab, students will simulate a copper deposit mine in order to demonstrate a single replacement reaction. This lab is set up as an inquiry lab where background information is given and a material list. Students will then create their own procedures and execute the lab. There are also single replacement problems embedded within the lab for extra review.
This is a project in which students will create their own word problem based upon a World Record. This project can be used as a summative assessment. Background, requirements, and guidelines for the project are embedded.
