I have students complete this guided research worksheet on forces, loads and shapes before the Straw Tower Engineering Challenge (posted on TPT). It is also a good, standalone lesson. Also use as a ready-made sub plan! This aligns with the Common Core Learning Standards in reading and writing for Technical subjects. (Answers to the worksheet can be obtained from the website. You can print the text version of the lab, link is under the lab activity.)
This is a fun activity for middle school or high school students. Use common materials, including candy, to determine the mechanical properties of that material. The students then use this knowledge to design an object (back of worksheet). This is a good introduction or culminating activity for a mechanical properties unit. Make sure you have extra candy available for hungry students! Includes 2 pages for theworksheet + my cover page
