This activity was developed for use with the C.O.R.A.L Class at Honeoye Central School in Honeoye NY. The students found it not only educational but a fun activity. I think you will find it a great activity for Elementary Classes. Remember to gather the material in advance and have plenty of old newspapers to put over the activity table. The sundial is probably the oldest scientific instrument know to man, it dates back to early Egypt around 1500 B.C. In addition to its use by the Egyptians it was also used in ancient Greece and Rome. In Europe the sundial was the most commonly used method to determine the time, even after the mechanical clock was developed in the 14th century. This is a lesson that can be used anytime of the year, but it probably works best when it brackets the equinox. Around the date of the two equinoxes, March 21 and September 21, and depending on your latitude, the day length can change by several minutes per day.
