I have been teaching Chinese to American high school students for nine years now. My goal is to create engaging, creative content for my students that is also challenging. I am a former instructor of Chinese at the Middlebury Summer Chinese School and recently served as co-director for the STARTALK Chinese teacher training program at Hamilton College.

The vocabulary and grammar in this story are aligned with the first five chapters of the popular textbook Integrated Chinese so that the story can be used in the classroom or independently to supplement that text. This guide was written for use in a Chinese language course, but could be easily adapted for use in a Social Studies/History course.
Coming up with Chinese names for a hundred new students each year can be time consuming! I use this assignment to allow students to come up with their own names using an easy-to-use online name generator. This assignment gives some background information on Chinese names and guidelines for creating their own. After students have come up with their names, I collect them and check for errors or inappropriate names.
