Read Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? by Patrice McLaurin and illustrated by Dian Wang. This story explores the everyday inventions and contributions of African-American inventors. Use the reader response tickets to gauge students' reactions to reading about scientific inventions and have them complete the daily timeline to identify inventions used in their own lives.

This single page activity of the Biography Unit covers important points in Maya Angelou's life. Students complete the worksheet following a read aloud or independent research. These activities relate to the picture book Someone New by Anne Sibley O'Brien. It's an easily-accessible story of three students new to the United States, and their peers' reactions to them. From wariness to friendship, your students can follow their short, powerful journeys. Use the Venn diagram to compare one of the featured set of friends. Gauge students' interest via the Reading Response Tickets. And use the word bank activity to discuss the emotional responses of all students involved.

First, count the 3-D shapes and write the numbers. Then, cut out shapes to create your own 3-D Shapes Poster! Students will identify 3-D shapes while increasing spatial awareness and fine motor skills. For students at beginning stages, the 3-D shapes for the poster are the same (and in the same order) as the initial practice worksheet. They can rely on the pattern to create a poster.

Here's an excellent introduction to velocity! The first page provides notes and a practice problem. The second page includes two additional problems. Early reading level text and drawing make this a fun, accessible activity. I use this lesson at a high school level for students on modified diplomas in Physics classes. It would also be great for TAG-identified students at the second/third grade level.
