Inverse Functions - Discovery Activity and Notes

Do your students really understand inverse functions? To help students with this concept, they can investigate and discover it by using the basic understanding of an inverse and then apply it to finding the equation of a function's inverse. This discovery investigation will show students that the graphs of inverse functions are a reflection over the line y=x. Students will also identify that not all functions are invertible. Students should have familiarity with graphing linear functions and w

Sets of Numbers Foldable - Set-Builder and Interval Notation Notes and Practice

This foldable is intended to introduce students to or reinforce their understanding of set-builder and interval notation for sets of numbers, whether they use them as solutions to equations or inequalities or for writing the domain and range of a function. There are examples of each type as well as an explanation of what the notation means. This resource comes with sample interactive notebook pages to help you best use the foldable, but it can also be used in a standard notebook or binder. Th

Algebra 2 Transformation of Functions - Discovery Activity

Using function operations, students discover how to transform linear, absolute value, and quadratic functions. From this investigation, students should be able to identify how to translate a function vertically or horizontally, reflect a function over the x-axis, and when the graph of a function will expand or contract. This can be used early on in the Algebra 2 curriculum as students only need to be familiar with graphing linear, absolute value and quadratic functions. For a version that can

Special Products of Polynomials - Discovery Activity

Help students discover "short cuts" when simplifying products of binomials. In this discovery investigation activity, students will look for patterns to simplify the following special products: product of two binomials with just a variable (no coefficient) and a number, product of the sum and difference of two terms (difference of squares), and square of a binomial. This investigation can be done in pairs or groups, or as a whole class activity. By allowing students to discover these patterns

Pre-Calculus Transformation of Functions - Discovery Activity

Using function operations, students discover how to transform linear, absolute value, quadratic, cubic, and radical functions. From this investigation, students should be able to identify how to translate a function vertically or horizontally, reflect a function over the x-axis, and when the graph of a function will expand or contract. This can be used early in a Pre-Calculus curriculum or after they have learned all of the above functions in Algebra 2. For a version that can be used earlier i

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching for 15+ years in various settings. I have taught in large public high schools and small parochial schools. Having worked with various ability levels from students not meeting standards to advanced students, I have developed materials at all levels.

Teaching style

My teaching style is student-centered. I believe that my role is to facilitate learning by providing materials to help students discover the mathematical truths in our world. I want to encourage my students to be problem solvers, not just in math, but in all areas of life.

Awards & shining teacher moments

The greatest joy in teaching has come for me when I know I've made a positive impact on students' lives. I have a few students who have taken the time to write letters of thanks telling me how much they learned in my class and how much they appreciated what I have taught them. Equally rewarding, if not more so, is when a student comes back to me and tells me that she uses what we learned in class all the time! These are the greatest gifts I can give my students and their appreciation is the greatest honor.

My own education history

After completing a bachelors in mathematics with a focus on pure mathematics and mathematical theory, I went on to pursue a master's degree in secondary education.

Additional biographical information

I currently hold a teaching license in both Wisconsin and Illinois in grades 6-12.
