Geometry Learning Targets Bundle - Common Core - I Can Statements

Students learn best when they have the goal in mind. While the curriculum outlines what the teacher should teach in a course, the learning target focuses on what the student is to learn. Since learning targets are for the students, they are student-centered and must be in student-friendly language as much as possible. While the Common Core State Standards address general goals, these are just one piece of the student learning target. With dozens of standards, and over a hundred individual skill

Definitions, Postulates, and Theorems Explained

Do your students have trouble understanding the difference between a definition and a theorem? This reference sheet is geared towards geometry students to help them grasp the mathematical terminology used in formal proof. My students were asking for a resource like this since we use these terms all the time and they had difficulty differentiating. It can be used as a handy resource to go along with lists of definitions, postulates, or theorems they have in their notes.

The Triangle Inequality Discovery Activity

Do your students have trouble retaining geometric concepts? Help them understand by discovering them. This discovery learning activity provides guidance for students to discover the triangle inequality theorem (the lengths of sides for which it will be form a triangle). Included in this document are two versions of the activity to allow differentiation of the lesson - one being open ended and the other more guided. Supplies that must be provided in order for students to complete this activit

Ratios in Special Right Triangles - Discovery Investigation Activity

How can students remember the shortcuts to the ratios in special right triangles (45-45-90 or 30-60-90)? Based off of triangle similarity and Pythagorean Theorem, this discovery learning investigation activity will help students find the ratios between the sides in 45-45-90 triangles, by reviewing properties of an isosceles triangle. Then students discover the ratios in 30-60-90 triangles by dividing an equilateral triangle in half. Students first look at examples and generalize any patterns t

Geometry Success Criteria Posters - Common Core - I Can Statements

Students learn best when they have the goal in mind. While the curriculum outlines what the teacher should teach in a course, the learning target focuses on what the student is to learn. But simply using the standard in student friendly language is not enough. Students need a criteria by which to measure their success. But how do you pin down all the skills that a student is expected to acquire in an entire year of geometry? Well I've done the work for you! There are over 100 success criteri

Student engagement is enhanced be giving students clear direction for their learning. These learning target posters take the Geometry standards and reword them to make them easier for students to understand. Written in "I can" statements, these large print posters can be displayed in the classroom to help students identify whether or not they are "on target" with their learning. Each poster is a full landscape letter sized sheet. The design is simple yet visually pleasing (see preview). Also

Geometry Essential Questions Posters - Common Core - Student Friendly Language

Student engagement is enhanced be giving students clear direction for their learning. Learning targets are most effective when they are tied to an essential question. These large print posters can be displayed in the classroom to help students identify whether or not they are "on target" with their learning. Each poster is a full landscape letter sized sheet. The design is simple yet visually pleasing (see thumbnails). Also, each poster has the Common Core State Standard code (e.g. G-CO.1) lis

Triangle Inequalities for Sides and Angles Discovery Activity

This is a discovery learning activity where students work in pairs or groups to determine what the relationship is between angle measures and the lengths of the opposite sides within a triangle. My students found an investigation activity more interesting than simply stating the theorem and it helps them retain the knowledge longer. This activity is aligned to the common core and the target is written in student friendly language at the top of the page so students can self-assess at the end of

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching for 15+ years in various settings. I have taught in large public high schools and small parochial schools. Having worked with various ability levels from students not meeting standards to advanced students, I have developed materials at all levels.

Teaching style

My teaching style is student-centered. I believe that my role is to facilitate learning by providing materials to help students discover the mathematical truths in our world. I want to encourage my students to be problem solvers, not just in math, but in all areas of life.

Awards & shining teacher moments

The greatest joy in teaching has come for me when I know I've made a positive impact on students' lives. I have a few students who have taken the time to write letters of thanks telling me how much they learned in my class and how much they appreciated what I have taught them. Equally rewarding, if not more so, is when a student comes back to me and tells me that she uses what we learned in class all the time! These are the greatest gifts I can give my students and their appreciation is the greatest honor.

My own education history

After completing a bachelors in mathematics with a focus on pure mathematics and mathematical theory, I went on to pursue a master's degree in secondary education.

Additional biographical information

I currently hold a teaching license in both Wisconsin and Illinois in grades 6-12.
