I have been a full-time teacher since 1987. I have had 29 years of teaching experience in a wide variety of settings including rural, urban, inner city, wilderness, and hospital based schools.
I have had experience working with elementary through high school students in traditional school settings as well as a hospital based inpatient psychiatry school, a therapeutic wilderness school, and a crisis unit for juvenile offenders. I have had extensive experience working with special education students in both inclusion and self-contained classroom settings. I have taught all academic subject areas. CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCE TASK
Students will apply decimal multiplication to Christmas shopping sprees. The activity is sequential and questions are dependent upon previous answers. Students can work independently or in a group to complete the task. ANSWER KEY is INCLUDED. Additionally, there is a UDL component as students can create their own problem and choose their own items to purchase.

PUMPKIN PLOP S.T.E.M. Activity
This is really appropriate for all ages. Have students donate pumpkins. As long as you have a variety of sizes, it works great. Use a digital scale to get the mass of each pumpkin and then have students make predictions about each pumpkin's ability to sink or float. Students should discuss their thinking.
Place each pumpkin in the water and have students observe, make predictions, write down data on the data sheet, and draw conclusions.

DECIMAL PATTERN PUZZLES
This is a WONDERFUL center for students who are learning about comparing and ordering decimals. I have used these puzzles as an introduction to the lesson AND as a center from practice
1. Copy each puzzle on cardstock.
2. Cut out each puzzle piece. INCLUDE THE BLACKED OUT PIECES. Put the puzzle pieces in a ziploc bag.

SOLID SHAPES MATCHING CENTER
Students will use their knowledge of solid figures to solve clues and match visual 3D shapes to their label and definition. Students use this graphic organizer to measure selected objects from around the room. You will need to have 3 Stations set up.
Station 1: metric rulers, yardsticks, tape measures with objects to measure length

This center includes a set of directions and several different sets of matching cards. All you have to do is print the center out and then copy it onto cardstock. STUDENTS LOVE THIS SELF-CHECKING CENTER. Use the original copy as your answer key. It is an easy way for students to work independently or in small groups to practice this essential place value skill.

METRIC LENGTH CONVERSION LESSON

CONVERT METRIC UNITS OF LENGTH CENTER
Teachers using this center need to gather 10 different objects to measure. Additionally, students should have metric rulers or meter sticks available to use. Students use this table to choose objects to measure in a particular metric unit (mm, cm, m, etc.) Students measure the object in ONE unit. Students in my class learn by experience, collaboration, research, experimentation, and MAKING MISTAKES! We use technology to research, practice concepts, and engage in online experiments. Students' ideas are always encouraged. Peer tutoring, flexible choices, and UDL are a big part of the dynamics of the learning that occurs in this classroom.
