FInishing First

This is an activity I created to bring the requirements of the Common Core missing addend in all positions. We needed to supplement the math program in our school and to integrate Green Eggs and Ham activities into all subjects.

In this document you will find word problems that are first grade friendly and align with CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1 Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems. These worksheets lend themselves to independent practice as well as identifying clue words that may help students decide if they are adding or subtracting. There are 20 word problems included.

Studies show that informing students of the goals for lessons helps students prepare for the lesson. Marzano includes using scales for students to demonstrate progress as Part of Element 1: Providing Clear Learning Scales and Goals. These scales have been made as a tool for students to analyze and report their progress. Included are the Common Core Grade 1 Math Goals that our school chose as Priority Standards. Add the room Snowflakes has been created to have a fun math center where students practice addition and move around the room. To differentiate, students can add the subtraction equation on the answer form.

My students have had a great time with Add the Room and are ready to start adding larger numbers. Since we will be doing Gingerbread as our theme, we needed a Gingerbread math center.
