This document provides over 15 teaching strategies to support second language acquisition in English language learners. I created and presented it to my school's teachers in a PD where they learned about BICS and CALP. There are also many links on the sheet that lead to articles and more instructional strategies. The teachers loved it!

After creating goals from our last year's ELPA21 scores, the students set goals for the upcoming assessment. If they go up on one domain test, they are given one of the four treats. They pick the treat they want and I make sure to get the congratulation candy card they picked out (with their name on the line) before the summer begins. They are so proud to see their goals come to life!

Once your ELL students pass the ELPA21 (YEAH!), they need to be monitored for the next two years. Use these concise yet thorough forms to help you check in with them. The first copy is for homeroom teachers to convey the ELL students' classroom status according to the four language domains. The second form is a self-evaluation for the proficient student to let the school know how they feel or think they are doing in the classroom. These one-page forms will tell you a lot and are very simple to

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching for 10 years but have specifically worked as an English language educator for the past 5 years. Helping students learn a new language is exciting and challenging! I love watching them learn and progress in their English language.

Teaching style

My classroom has a revolving door as I teach many small groups daily. These groups are differentiated by their English acquisition level. We work on vocabulary and grammar predominantly as I scaffold lessons to support their learning. I was educated on the SIOP teaching strategy and implement many of its facets. Pre-teaching vocabulary was the focus of my Master's final project. Each of my students have an interactive notebook and we get pretty good at cutting and pasting by October.

My own education history

Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education grades 1st - 6th from Northwestern College (IA) (1996) Master's degree in English-as-a-Second-Language from Morningside University (2024)

Additional biographical information

My family and I love to compete and participate in life. When we are not cheering on the sidelines for our favorite teams, we are playing games and traveling together. I also love to work in my flower garden and work outside on our acreage. There is not much time for sitting indoors but you could find me with a good book and a 1,000 piece puzzle in the winter.
