About the store
I have been a classroom teacher, special educator, tutor, and reading specialist in various positions for 20 years. I have worked in a variety of public and private settings and roles. My most recent experience is in an urban elementary school primarily composed of ELL students. Most of these have socioeconomic challenges and trauma histories with tremendous areas of need and resource deficits. Their presence at school every day reflects the hope they have for a better life even when they don't believe it is possible. I do!

END OF YEAR READING BRIDGE ACTIVITY

Want a way to connect with incoming students you meet at the end of the school year and then reconnect when you meet again in the fall? Attached is an activity to give these students on "transition day". It is a mini book log in the shape of a key to encourage them to unlock the key to reading by doing summer reading. When they return in the fall, they bring in the completed key which will unlock the classroom treasure chest for a prize. When I can, I include a small book to send home with it

INDEPENDENT READING VOCABULARY PRACTICE-editable

Attached is a free Word document which provides students with further practice on key story vocabulary. It can be edited for use with any genre. On Monday of each week, I introduce a new text and pre-teach its vocabulary. During Guided Reading time that day, students re-read for fluency. Each of the remaining four days of the week, students use this sheet to locate the key vocabulary and integrate it into a sentence of their own making, culminating in a fun partner game on Friday. Experience

Teaching style

My teaching style is very fluid. I believe that every child deserves a special education and aim to meet each child where they are and move them forward. I work hard at creating interactive lessons with varied learning styles in mind. You are likely to find me using technology, realia, music and the arts on a daily basis to hook my students and set them off on a love of learning. As my quote hints: I LOVE READING and everything associated with it. I LOVE WORDS and the way that understanding them, and each other, can be transformative. Breaking down language barriers is my goal. I am organized and resourceful but also think on my feet often and go with the flow. My belief is that someone needs to expect the best for "my kids" so why not me? I will give my best in the process of getting them there.

My own education history

B.A. in Studio Art and Psychology from Boston College; Masters of Social Work from Boston University; Masters of Education from Salem State College, CAGS in Reading from Salem State College.

Additional biographical information

Have raised 7 children in a blended family, 4 girls, 3 boys, and worked as a family social worker and addictions counselor for 10 years before becoming a teacher. I have recently returned to working as a therapist on a part-time basis due to the tremendous mental health needs that seem to exist everywhere.
