Functional and Practical Teaching

Students can practice identifying new words using context clues. The sentences and words are excerpts from Patricia Polacco's Pink and Say. Students record the underlined words, identify the context clues and write the meaning of the word. This activity can be used during whole group, small group, collaborative work, or independent practice.

There are 7 graphic organizers in all that focus on the skills above. The author's purpose graphic organizer uses a technique that we have found successful in our classrooms. Once students enter the 3rd grade they no longer identify the author's purpose as persuade, inform or entertain.

Use a pencil as a visual aid to identify prefixes, base words & suffixes.

This graphic organizer is for students to identify the topic and the main idea of the passage. Students circle the words that are repeated in the passage and identify them as the topic in 1-2 words. This graphic organizer will allow students to record their thinking and searching process for making inferences.

Students can reflect on how they are feeling and what they are going to do to be successful on a Test Day. We have used this visual reflection on benchmark and SOL test days. Also included is the same visual for students to reflect how they feel after the test.

Students who are still struggling with guide word questions can use this visual to help them find which words will be on the dictionary page. We use the down and up method with guide words. You check each letter starting with the first guide word going down to the word choice. Then you go up from the word choice to the second guide word.
