How Do Predators Make Decisions About Prey?

Created by
GandCScience
Students will research the factors that drive a unique phenomenon in ecosystems - mimicry! They will explore and conduct research to determine the factors a predator uses to choose - or AVOID - prey. Guided by a NHMU entomologist using the same methods they use, students will build new, transferrable understandings of this relationship dynamic and the impact on mimics in the midst of biodiversity and range changes within the ecosystems they live in.

How Do We Restore Aspen Forests?

Created by
GandCScience
Students work with forestry land managers and scientists to evaluate and support aspen forest populations. Engaging interactives will promote observation skills and draw out prior knowledge as students learn how to assess the health of aspen forests. They will gather their own evidence and use the USDA's guidelines for Aspen Restoration to develop recommendations for their chosen study site.

GandCScience
These Science and Engineering Protocols guide students through any science and engineering practice for Grades 9-12. Each protocol contains step-by-step questioning series and prompts to help students understand the science and engineering practices on a deeper level. The protocols will compliment teacher lessons and focus students on the individual science and engineering practice called out in each standards.

Research Quest: How Will Bat Populations Be Impacted by the Insect Apocolypse?

Created by
GandCScience
Engage your students in evaluating the impacts of ecosystem change on resource availability critical to animals’ diets. Students will examine how adaptable the diet of bats – critical to healthy ecosystems all over the world - are in responding to changes in their food sources – insects! Students will explore the phenomenon through virtual dissections of bat stomach contents to learn what different species of bats eat. Led by a research scientist who studies bats, they will use museum collection

Research Quest: What Drives Decomposition?

Created by
GandCScience
Students examine the role of fungi as decomposers in the matter cycle. With engaging interactives they will study the factors that drive faster rates of decomposition and how human activities impact these ecosystem services.

This new, standards aligned investigation uses an impressive collection of ceratopsian fossils from the Natural History Museum of Utah's paleontology collections to support students in their work to analyze and interpret data from the fossil record central to their research question. Specfically, students will identify patterns and phenomena that illustrate the existence, diversity, extinction, and change of ceratopsians over the 100 million years they lived on Earth. The investigation is organi

About the store

Experience

Over 50 years of collective education experience- essentially the "Gandalfs of Teaching". We love to try new things and pass along what we learned (generally the hard way). We work as district science specialists.

Teaching style

Teaching hands-on, solving real life problems, supporting students as they build their skills, adding a dash of humor along the way.

Awards & shining teacher moments

We teach a few kindergarten classes a year- it's like facing your biggest fears while being watched by 30 small curious humans. Anyone who teaches kindergarteners deserves a Medal of Honor- presented for those who distinguish themselves “through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty”.

My own education history

We both have Bachelor's Degrees in education and Master's Degrees in Curriculum and Instructional Design. We have endorsements aplenty- including instructional coaching, ESL, ELA and science to name a few.

Additional biographical information

We're just your run of the mills over-achievers who love to take risks and providing teachers with resources to make teaching a smidge easier.
