Ms. Kara is a seasoned educator, teacher coach and professional development facilitator in the California Bay Area dedicated to creating the conditions that support critical thinking, joy, healing, and critical life skills. She taught in preK-12 classrooms for 11 years before transitioning full time into her current roles as a professor in Reach University's teacher credentialing program, as well as a program designer/professional development leader, graphic designer and communications manager for Agency by Design Oakland.
While teaching she earned her Masters in Educational Leadership doing action research exploring systems literacy in lower elementary grades, developed a Tk-5th Grade bilingual science program in SFUSD, served as a project based learning peer coach, designed and implemented curriculum as Lead Teacher at the Mills College Children's Lab school, worked Agency by Design to lead teacher professional development fellowships in maker centered learning, and designed professional development series for the Bay Area Writing Project for PreK-12th grade teachers.
Ms. Kara has been backwards designing unit plans and building beautiful and engaging learning materials from scratch since day one. Beyond her skill in teaching core subjects like ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies, Ms. Kara is passionate about arts integration and the power of hands on craftsmanship. She has brought farming, screenprinting, sewing, weaving, and natural dying into schools from the Preschool to University level.
She loves working in community to create fun, culturally resonant classrooms children love to be in! She knows that children everywhere are ready to rise to any challenge that has the right balance of authenticity, relevance, and joy, and she is excited to share those resources that have really brought her student’s love of learning to life!
