This long division lesson was originally paired with the chapter book study, Funny Frank by Dick King-Smith. It can be also used in isolation. Just copy the story book front & back for each student, then fold. Given the activating question of how many eggs can a hen lay within a year, students use this number to divide between 2, and then 3 people. Of course, students can use their knowledge of digit values, base ten manipulates, or algorithm to help them solve the problem. DIRECTIONS: H

Place base-ten manipulatives according to the directions into 6 bags and give each student a recording booklet. Model division strategies (equal sharing, base-10 exchange, tally marks, multiplication).
