This is one of my top selling products! I made this powerpoint lesson as an alternative way to teach telling time to the hour and half past the hour. The presentation explains the hands of the clock and how to read them. I have a little 'trick' to help them remember. There are also examples for the kids to go through together.
This is one of my top selling products! I did this poetry unit when I taught grade 5. It takes about 10 days and there are examples of each of the poems (acrostic, autobiography, cut-up poem, shape poem, sense poem, haiku, cinquain, alliteration). You can start using it right away. Can be adapted to any grade.
This ia a wonderful book by Shel Silverstein that looks at a boy as he ages and what he needs as he grows up. We infer on a daily basis without realizing it. Students are challenged to infer what the tree represents in the story.
I like reading Fairy tales when I teach Point of View.
After I read the story of the three little pigs, we discuss whose point of view the story is being told from. Students always mention that the wolf was the evil character.
Then I read the story The True Story of the Three Pigs by Jon Scieszka. We discuss whose point of view the story is being told from.
Attached I've included a letter format page. Students are encouraged to see the wolf's point of view and to explain his side of the story.
Retelling seems like a simple task, but we need students to make meaningful connections to what they are reading as this will help them better understand the text. This is a 3R's worksheet for students to fill in before, during and after reading with prompts to help guide them.
As part of the science curriculum, students are expected to learn plant life cycles. This is powerpoint can be printed and laminated and used as a poster to show the different steps. This also assists in building appropriate science vocabulary.
I made these time worksheets (to the hour and half hour) when I taught grade 1. I provided them with different opportunities to assess their knowledge (draw the correct hands on the clock, write the time, circle the correct time) There are 8 pages to keep students busy.
This is a rubric I use when assessing grade 3 or 4 paragraphs. It looks at topic, details and grammar. I simply highlight their level so I can see it clearer. As I've copied 2 on one page, you could attach this to the students work.
With Christmas just around the corner, we begin to think about what we will do with our students. As with every year, we sing the 12 days of Christmas. Did you know that for Christians each item has symbolism? I start 12 days before school ends and I read each gift explaining what it means. Students can colour in the pictures or teachers can use it as a teaching guide.
During the last week of school before Christmas break, I like to get the kids singing. I had them make their own lyrics to the song 12 days of Christmas. Students are put into groups of four and then sing to the rest of the class. This was hillarious and alot of fun. Here's an example.
This is a mini lesson I did with my grade 2's. At the beginning I get them to think about the symbols found in different fairy tales (activate prior knowledge) and then I did a variety of different activities after reading different fairy tales like writing a letter or reviewing a story. Worksheets that go with some of the activities are found in my file What are fairy tales?
These are the attachments/worksheets that go with my fairy tale minilesson titled Fairy tale minilesson. This file contains a chart to compare/contrast fairy tales, wanted poster, and a page to review a fairy tale.
I came across a wonderful piece of text to use with point of view. Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne lends itself well to different voices. It is a story about a walk in the park by 4 different voices, written as mini stories. Make sure you look at the pictures, as well.
Here is the plan:
• Read the whole story through
• Have the students make a list of who the possible voices are (who is telling each story)
• Read each mini story separately and have students write who they think is
This is a presentation explaining the difference between nouns and adjectives. Students are given an opportunity after each mini lesson to identify the noun or adjective in the sentences provided. I end with a short story where the students have to fill in the blank with an adjective. This can be used with any age group to encourage students to make their writing interesting.
I like using fairy tales when I teach point of view.
After I read the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, we discuss whose point of view are we hearing the story from.
Then we try to imagine Goldilocks point of view. Why did she break into the bears home?
Attached i've included a letter-format page. Students are encouraged to think as if they are goldilocks and explain her/their side of the story.
I have broken down the steps on how to calculate mean in a grade 3 class by choosing numbers that are easily added and divided by a low number. Before you teach mean, it's important that your students have a solid foundation with multiplication and division (fact families).
This book by Jan Brett is about 2 mice that explore the home of the other mouse. They soon realize that it really is 'home sweet home' in your own home. We infer on a daily basis without realizing it. Students are challenged to infer what the author's message is
I created these unplugged activities to give my students some practice with moving along a grid (up, down, left, right) You could use the cardinal movements (N,S,E,W) Each slide is a different theme. Students get to choose which slide they want to work on based on their interest. Some of the themes I include are: fairy tales, animals and nature. I was going to print the google slides, but can also be assigned to your online kids to be completed on a separate piece of paper or a google doc. You c
I made a quick 2 page worksheet to introduce students to the concept of capacity using a model they can relate to -- a small water bottle. The worksheet asks students to look at the items listed and state whether they hold more than a litre or less than a litre. This works for primary students or any students on a modified program.
I've complied a sample of what would be said at an Identification, placement and review commitee. Some of the notes include possible points to discuss such as strengths, needs and accomodations. This can easily be altered to be used with a student in any grade.
