The Outsiders Reading Quizzes Chapters ONE through TWELVE in English and Spanish
The format of these quizzes is short answer. These questions are on important events, quotes, or characters from each chapter, and are in both English and Spanish. When I taught I usually chose five questions to quiz my students on to see if they had read the chapter before coming to class with reasonable comprehension. I also employed the grading policy of "three or more correct gets you 100%" which my students enjoyed, but you could also do all ten as an "open book" quiz if you so desired.

The Outsiders Chapter 4 "Bob's Death" Johnny Cade: Guilty or Innocent?
In Chapter 4 of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, the Soc Bob is stabbed and killed at the fountain in the park where Johnny and Ponyboy are trying to relax and get away from their houses. This activity allows students to research the events and decide on one of four possible verdicts were Johnny to go on trial for this crime.

The Outsiders (after chapter 4): Bob's Death Rewrite
Probably my favorite assignment that I've ever created, based on what my students have done with it through the years! After Bob the Soc gets stabbed in the park by Johnny, students are tasked with writing what actually happened from another character's POV other than Ponyboy, since Ponyboy's head was under water when it happened. Includes the two-to-a-page assignment and an example that I wrote. Allows for great creativity and differentiation!

The Outsiders Debates
This assignment has always been fun for the students, as they get to research and be an important part of a debate on one of three issues stemming from the novel. This needs to be done somewhere from the midway point of the novel or at the very end. Included is the assignment, roles for each student on a debate team and what they need to accomplish in each role, and the order of events in the debate. Fun for all!

The Outsiders You are the Producer
I'm not going to lie--this is one of the most complicated assignments that I ever created. This is based on the ORIGINAL version of the film by Francis Ford Coppola (not The Complete Outsiders that he later created by adding new scenes). If you have higher level students and they've seen the film, this is for you! Experience
28 plus years teaching language arts, reading, and drama in two middle schools in Florida.
Teaching style
I was a teacher of middle school language arts for over 28 years. My schools were high SES schools, so I tried to come up with challenging assignments for my students. I expected my students to read outside of class, so I often created reading quizzes to make sure that they did so with reasonable retention of important characters and events from each chapter. I also enjoyed creating assignments that were more open-ended, and allowed students to work up to their level and beyond, with no one correct answer.
